Marilyn Smith

Marilyn J. Smith, Keynote Speaker

Marilyn J. Smith is a native of Seattle; she received her Bachelor of Arts in English and Master of Arts in Counseling from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. In 1986 she founded the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (ADWAS), based in Seattle and has been Executive Director ever since. She was on the National Board of Deaf Women United from 1993 to 1997 and Vice President of the National Association of the Deaf from 2002 to 2004. Her work has brought her many awards including one from President Clinton, the NAD, the Phi Kappa Zeta Sorority, Gallaudet University and others. She was one of the winners of the Ford Foundation’s “Leadership for a Changing World” award in 2003.

On a more personal level, Marilyn is an avid reader, loves cooking, and being with friends. She often goes to Norway to visit family and gets away from the rain once a year on the island of Maui. Her main focus right now is her three year old Deaf grandson, Tyler. Because of him and the lack of quality education she is a part of a group trying to set up a bi-bi school called the Seattle Deaf School.
